    PCOS- Irregular Periods

    Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder found in women and is common amongst women of reproductive age. One of the characteristic symptoms of PCOS is irregular periods or menstrual cycles.

    A woman’s menstrual cycle is normally regulated by the hormones es-tro-gen and progesterone. However, in women with PCOS, the ovaries produce higher than normal levels of an-dro-gens (male hormones) such as tes-to-ster-one, resulting in hormonal imbalances. These imbalances can disrupt the normal ovulation process, leading to irregular or absent periods. This is termed PCOS irregular periods.

    Irregular periods in PCOS can manifest in different ways. Some women may experience long cycles where the menstrual period occurs every 35 days or longer, while others may have shorter cycles (less than 21 days). Some women may also have extremely heavy, prolonged periods or PCOS irregular bleeding.

    5. Mood Swings – irregular periods lead to mood swings and depressive symptoms.

    7. Limit Caffeine and Alcohol: Excessive caffeine and alcohol intake can contribute to hormonal imbalances. Limit consumption of these substances and opt for healthier alternatives like herbal teas or infused water.
    8. Keep Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated and improve your overall health.

    Relation of Dairy Products & PCOS

    The relationship between dairy products and PCOS is not fully understood, and there is ongoing research on this topic. Some studies suggest that dairy intake may have an impact on PCOS symptoms, while others show no significant association. Here are a few points to consider for the impact of dairy on PCOS:

    1. In-su-lin Resistance: Dairy products, particularly those high in fat, are a source of saturated fats. Consuming excess saturated fats may contribute to in-sul-in resistance, which is common in women with PCOS. It is recommended to choose low-fat dairy options or include other sources of calcium and protein in the diet, such as fortified plant-based milk or dairy alternatives.
    2. Inflammation: Some evidence suggests that dairy consumption may cause inflammation in certain individuals. Chronic low-grade inflammation is associated with PCOS and its symptoms. If you find that consuming dairy products worsens inflammation in your body, you may consider reducing or eliminating them from your diet.
    3. Hormonal Influence: Dairy products naturally contain hormones, such as es-tro-gen, progesterone, and in-sul-in-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1).
