The Hymen is a thin, pinkish membrane that envelops the entrance of the vagina. It is a part of the vulva, lying half an inch inside of the vaginal canal. Its exact role in the female body is still unknown. However, medical researchers believe that it can help prevent the entry of pathogens into the vagina, but only till puberty.
Usually, when females have sex for the first time, their hymen gets ruptured. However, the hymen may get broken at any age due to many other reasons like riding a bicycle, horseback riding, swimming, gymnastics, insertion of tampons, or even because of regular pap smear tests. In some cases, it is also possible for women to be born without a hymen. Hymen rupture may be associated with some blood loss and pain but many women may not even be aware that their hymen is torn as they experience no pain or blood loss. Some people link hymen rupture with loss of virginity and its repair to restore virginity, but that’s not a true association.
Whatever may be the case, a broken or absent hymen can be restored or built by a gynaecologist by performing a cosmetic surgical procedure called Hymenoplasty, simply known as Hymen Repair Surgery. Dr. Shilpa Bansal Agrawal at Harleys Cosmetic & Women Clinic is one of the renowned female surgeons who specialize in Hymen Repair Surgery in Mumbai.

Before commencing with Hymen Restoration Surgery, follow these pre-treatment instructions:
The hymen repair surgery is performed as follows:
Firstly, the patient is provided with local or general anesthesia to ensure the comfort of the patient throughout her surgery.
Next, the surgeon partially cuts out the existing remains of the torn hymen to eliminate uneven tissues. Then, the surgeon attaches the two ends of the torn hymen in two layers with the help of dissolvable sutures or a laser probe which generates a lot of heat. This allows the hymen to grow back together on their own as it heals. If the patient has no hymen at all, with hymenoplasty in Mumbai, the gynaecologist may graft a small tissue piece from the vaginal flap to reconstruct the broken fragments of the vagina and tighten the vaginal entrance. The newly constructed hymen resembles the natural hymen.
The overall surgery takes between 30 minutes to one hour to complete. After the hymen repair surgery, slight temporary discomfort and numbness may persist around the incision site for a few days. However, they can be alleviated and controlled with prescribed painkillers. The patient can even expect to experience slight swelling and bruising which resolves considerably within a week following the surgery. It’s normal for the patient to feel a bit tired and let down at first after the surgery but as soon as the body heals itself, the patient can expect to feel and look better.
Approximately, 4-6 weeks are required to completely heal from surgery without leaving behind any noticeable scars. Generally, the patients get satisfied with their surgery outcome only when their operation site has completely healed. The new hymen lasts until it’s broken again.
